A two-year project measuring COVID-19 antibody prevalence among Albertan children is underway at the University of Alberta thanks to funding from the Government of Alberta.
The project, part of the CHILD Cohort Study (CHILD), received an award of nearly $700,000 and is being led by Dr. Piush Mandhane, CHILD Edmonton site leader.
“Serologic tests are blood tests that measure antibodies in the blood,” said Dr. Mandhane. “Our study will collect blood samples from Edmonton children, with a focus on CHILD participants, to look for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 infection, the virus that causes COVID-19. This antibody test will show if an individual has been exposed to the virus in the past.”
“Canadians have been profoundly impacted by COVID-19 and related public health measures,” said Dr. Padmaja Subbarao, CHILD’s Director.
“We are truly fortunate to be able to leverage our cohort of 3,500 families to generate rapid information about the impacts of COVID-19 in children.”
