Mikaela, 8 years old, Vancouver, BC

Statement: My poster is about the wonderful things the CHILD cohort study has done. On one of my visits, I got scared when my mom told me about the blood test, but I realized it was not so bad because they gave me a special cream. My favourite part was when hug robot squeezed my arm. I also liked it when I wore the GPS. Some of the other things I got to do was the breathing test, the allergy test and the pee and poo samples. One thing CHILD has discovered was that if a mom is having artificial sweetener during pregnancy, the baby has a higher risk of obesity.

My mom has to do a lot of boring paper work for the CHILD Study. I don’t have to do the paper work YET, but I do help the doctors by giving them samples from my body, even the gross stuff! I also got to wear a fitness tracker, it’s kind of like a Fitbit. They also gave me an allergy test to see what I’m allergic to. It didn’t hurt that much, but it was neat to see what I’m allergic to. If you get a chance to be part of the CHILD study, don’t feel scared! Just DO IT!.

Statement: My poster is about what being part of the CHILD Study means to me. How a few hours of my time can help CHILD Study to predict, prevent and treat children’s illnesses. 3 Hours of my time is nothing compared to a lifetime for another child who is suffering from allergies or asthma.

The symbols on my poster:

  • Silhouette of a pregnant mother – because the CHILD Study starts in the womb of the mother just like my Mama who volunteered us to join the CHILD Study when I was still in her tummy.
  • Shield inside the heart – to defend and protect the child (circle with triangle means Unity; upside-down mushroom means Growth)
  • Heart (map of Earth) – with love, everything is possible and we can conquer all

Dylan, 10 years old, St. Albert, AB

Statement: Small hands can make a big difference: When I was asked by my mom if I wanted to be part of the Covid-19 study with the Child Study program I was excited about the chance to help. My mom is a nurse at the hospital where they care for Covid 19 patients and I sometimes get scared that my mom will catch Covid too. I felt helpless at times and this study gave me the chance to help fight Covid-19. I drew this picture of a mine and my mom’s hands clasped together with a power charge behind it to show how together we are stronger in the fight against Covid-19. Small hands can make the difference!!

Adele, 8 years old, Edmonton, AB

Statement: What is my poster all about? It’s about how sometimes you feel so useless, small, and weak (especially if you’re a kid), but you look into a mirror and you imagine, “one day I’ll grow up and be useful, and maybe Even so big, I’ll stand out like a fire on a dark night, and I’ll try to be as strong as that big oak tree out the window! I can’t wait! :)” You imagine yourself that same good person, so different, but you know you can be if you try……. Just like the kitten in my painting, that was so small, but it imagined itself as big and strong as a tiger! And the CHILD Study is trying to help kids grow up to be the best they can be. I also remember coming to the CHILD Study and getting tested for allergies, and finding out I was allergic to cats. That’s also why I chose this picture to paint for the contest.
